Gregory Bonga Perkins is the consummate Hawaiian waterman. Growing up he was a fixture on Hawaii’s south shore beaches which lead to an early tutelage of the ocean and it’s surf disciplines by some of the original Waikiki beach boys. Learning from these pioneers he mastered the crafts of surfing, stand-up paddle surfing, canoe surfing and paddling. With this idealistic upbringing it’s no wonder that his style combines the best of the old with new.
Recognized as a fearless charger in the powerful winter surf of Hawaii’s north shore, he is one of the few that tackles Pipeline on a longboard. Pushing the limits of modern longboarding is what his reputation is built upon. Yet, equally impressive are his skills on shortboards or in average, everyday surf. A relentless competitor, his powerful, stylish approach has earned him countless victories and podiums in contests around the world.
Perkins won his first ASP World Longboard Championship title in 1996, defeating Alex Salazar (Brazil) in the final. In 2008, he reclaimed the world title by beating France’s Antoine Delpero in the final at San Clemente, California.He finished runners up three times in 1994, 1997 and 2002. He also finished third in the ASP World Tour on six occasions in 1995, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2009.
